Originally built in 1910, Cornell Hotel de France has been owned and operated by the Lambert Family for almost forty years. In that time the Lamberts have created, in San Francisco, the kind of small three star hotel that may be found on the rive gauche in Paris. For a moderate price, customers can have the personal comfort of a bed and breakfast.
What guests are saying!
"Having read the reviews and looked at the Hotel website, I was still not prepared for the decor in the Hotel. A bit too much for my partner, but I found it rather charming, each floor is named after an artist, we were on the Modiglani floor. Our room is listed as a "cozy Queen room", it certainly was cosy. but big enough for us, as generally we were out from around 9.30 am, until 8.00 pm each day. The bed was really comfortable, the room and bathroom were clean, with daily maid service, complimentary toiletries was also an unexpected nice touch. There was no air con or fan in our room, but as the temperarture was around 17 - 19 degrees centigarde (62 - 66), and the windows opened, we didn't need either. The location is great as it is just up the hill from Union Square, close enough to walk to (around 5 mins to the Square), 8-10 mins to where the trollies turn around, the Westfield Mall, the visitor info centre, the metro & bart stations and the stop for the "F" line streetcars that take you to Fishermans Wharf, yet far enough to have a quiet night. Oh, and only two blocks - downhill- from Chinatown. A couple of doors down is a theatre The restaurant in the basement was even more amazing decor wise, and breakfast served by Violet set us up for the day, we normally did not feel hungry until around 4-6 hours later. Breakfast is either french toast (2 slices) plus a piece of fruit, or 2 slices of toast and two eggs served any style you want, one slice of bacon and around a tablespoon of hash browns, with a piece of fruit. There is also cereal, fresh orange juice and coffee or tea. Violet does an amazing job of serving breakfast all on her own, so please tip generously. Reception staff were very polite, friendly and helpful."
